What is a DEP?
The DEP (Differentiated Education Plan) sets the standards for learning by establishing the current level of knowledge the student has mastered and the ways in which the school will meet the needs of the students. Each certified student in grades three through five is given a DEP and the document is checked based on, but not limited to the following:

Flexible grouping covers a range of instructional options for instruction including whole class, small group, and independent reading. Pull-Out
This refers to a teacher pulling a small group of students out of the classroom to work on assignments in another area of the building.
Co-Teaching
TD teacher is teaching with another teacher on the the grade level to present the information to a group of students.

Hands-On Equations is a supplementary program that can be used with any math curriculum to provide students with a solid foundation for success with algebra.
Problem Solver/Challenge Math
Students are exposed to word problems and challenging math problems that require them to use their higher level problem solving skills.

The Navigation series focuses on topics that emphasize the importance of incorporating the Principles and Standards into our mathematics curriculum.
Building/Organizing Thinking Skills
The #1 selling Thinking Skills program in the world--Building Thinking Skills(r) helps students develop the broad range of analytical skills they'll need to improve academic performance, score higher on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and qualify for higher-paying future jobs.

National experts in the fields of math education, mathematics, and gifted and talented education and teachers designed the curriculum. The content units of instruction were based on the NCTM Content Standards (2000) and include Number, Algebraic Thinking, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability.

Differentiated Units
The Magnet teachers work diligently to provide instruction that meets the needs of their individual students. In addition, the teachers work collaboratively to plan with the Magnet Coordinator and TD teacher to plan units of study that offer choice and enrichment based on students academic levels.
__Depth and Complexity__
Instructional strategy created by Sandra Kaplan who is an expert in gifted education and differentiated curriculum. She is a professor of clinical education at USC.
Curriculum Compacting
When students show mastery of a math topic based on pre-assessment, they may be given an alternate project on the same topic to work on during math.
Project Based Learning
In Project Based Learning students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge.
Problem Based Learning
In a problem-based learning (PBL) model, students engage complex, challenging problems and collaboratively work toward their resolution.
Learning Contracts
Begin with an agreement between the teacher and the student. The teacher specifies the necessary skills expected to be learned by the student and the required components of the assignment, while the student identifies methods for completing the tasks. This strategy (1) allows students to work at an appropriate pace; (2) can target learning styles; and (3) helps students work independently, learn planning skills, and eliminate unnecessary skill practice.

Socratic Seminars are a highly motivating form of intellectual and scholarly discourse conducted in K-12 classrooms. They usually range from 30-50 minutes--longer if time allows--once a week

Tiered instruction invites educators to rethink traditional educational practices based upon a prior time when students were more similar in background and readiness.
Padeia Seminar
A Paideia Seminar is a collaborative, intellectual dialogue about a text, facilitated with open-ended questions. The two developmental learning goals of a Paideia Seminar are to help students improve their social and intellectual skills. Specific objectives for Paideia Seminar center around increased understanding of the ideas and values.

Extracurricular Activities
Math Olympiads
Spectrum of the Arts
TD, Music, and Art teachers nominate one 4th or 5th grader from each school for the following categories: Art, Drama, Dance, and Creative Writing. This occurs in the second semester. Parents of nominated students fill out brief applications and return them to nominating teachers. The applications go into a lottery. Selected students spend a week in June at a half-day camp where they explore their talents.
Odyssey of the Mind
Problem solving club for students in 4th and 5th grade.
Duke TIP
Students in 4th and 5th grades who score above the 95th percentile on either Math or Reading EOG tests from the previous year are given applications.
Chess Club
More information to come in regards to how to sign up.

This is for 4th-5th grade students only. The team can consist of 7 students and there is a try out that will take place during the 1st Quarter of school. More information will come home soon!

This a great way for students to learn more about something that interest them. At Cotswold all students participate in our clubs. The teachers and fellow community members teach these exciting clubs that range from Woodworking to Yoga.
Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade.
